Below is Joshua Bell world renowned violinist, playing a violin worth a cool $3.5 million at a subway in D. C. He plays one of Bach's most famous and complex works but how many people stop and take notice? 6 that's it. If this isn't an indication that music is on a slow decent into commercial brainwashing than what is. In Boston Joshua bell sold out entire theaters at $100 a pop.
In my opinion there is no value in music any more. Although listeners may think that music defines them in some spiritual way. Really we only think about the image that we want to be portrayed as. i. e the rocker, emo or high society douche. Take Josh Bell, a god amongst men in the violin world but put him undergrounds of DC and he becomes the invisible man. Imagine if Beethoven was walked into a shopping and started playing 'Fur Elise', would anyone care, no because the people who go and watch operas, ballets and symphonies and those who think of themselves better than everyone else. Who is to say that out of those thousands of people who walked past Josh Bell, some of them were the ones who actually went to his sold out concerts. But in the context of a subway can't even spare a few cents. Is music alive and well? Who knows.
